Today, on 22 September, we promote all cancer patients' welfare and spread hope and cheer to them and their caregivers. It's also a day to create awareness about cancer.

Rose day is celebrated in the memory of 12-year-old Melinda Rose from Canada, who was diagnosed with cancer of the blood - Askins cancer. The doctors gave her just a few weeks to live; however, she continued to live on for six months. The diagnosis didn't put the 12-year-old down, and she chose to live a meaningful life spreading love and hope to other patients. She wrote emails, letters and verses to other patients to spread hope. What a legacy!

Cancer is a deadly disease and a leading cause of death worldwide. It is caused by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. People living with cancer go through rigorous treatments which are tasking to the body and mind. It causes loss of appetite and varied eating habits. This affects their physical appearance and health, which can be very scary. Their emotional and physical wellbeing is often challenged; therefore, support is much needed.

There is light at the end of the tunnel -  many cancers can be cured if diagnosed early and treated appropriately. Early detection includes two components:

  • Early diagnosis: Early identification and appropriate treatment can help treat. Also, being aware of cancer symptoms, accessing medical advice when in doubt and referrals to the right medical services can be advantageous.
  • Screening: This helps to identify findings of specific cancer or pre-cancer before it has developed symptoms. Screening applies to some cancers and not all.

We cannot end this blog without recognising the advancements in technology that have improved the chances of recovery, and we no longer refer to cancer as the big C. Also, the media has played a significant role in demystifying and destigmatising issues and concerns around cancer. This awareness brings comfort, hope and needed knowledge to cancer patients, those affected, and the general public; however, more can be done to educate the public and end the stigma surrounding cancer.

In the spirit of Melinda Rose, let's spend quality time with the patients and share a rose. Roses are a sign of tenderness and care, and it is a lovely gesture to share a rose. Let's show them that we care.

Until next time, let's share a rose!🌹
