Happy Cupcake Lover's Day! 🧁

In the 19th Century, the term “cupcake” was used for cakes made up of ingredients measured by the cupful. Teacups and ramekins (small clay pots) were used for baking hence the name “cupcakes”. This was way before the invention of multi-cup pans.

Amelia Simmons invented the cupcake. She published her first cookbook in 1796.

The first cupcake flavour was chocolate cake with white icing called the, surprisingly, cupcake. This was the first commercial cupcake unveiled by Hostess in 1919. 

Cupcakes were also called numbers (1234) cakes or quarter cakes. 1234 simply because they are made of four ingredients one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour and four eggs.

The most famous cupcake flavours to date are chocolate and vanilla. 

Fun facts about cupcakes  

• Cupcakes were initially flavoured with spices and dried fruits and not frosted.
• Cupcakes gained popularity in the 2000s when bakeries like Magnolia bakery were featured in Sex and the City.
• The record for eating the most cupcakes is 29 cupcakes in 30 seconds.
• A giant cupcake in the world weighed 1200Lbs and had 2 million calories.
