The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was implemented by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and UN Women to promote women and girls in science and gender equality.

The United Nations established this special day to achieve full and equal access to and participation in Science for women and girls and further achieve gender equality and women empowerment.

The theme for this year is Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: “Water unites us.” Women and girls should be recognised as agents of change and not only as beneficiaries, including given the acceleration of SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation).

“With water, the journey of humanity started”

HRH El-Sharifa Fatima El-Hashemite.

The global community has encouraged efforts to empower women and girls in science in the recent past. However, women and girls are still excluded from participating fully in science in certain countries. Also, women have tremendously made progress in higher education, but there is clear under-representation in fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

According to UNESCO data (2014-2016), around 30% of women participate in a STEM field related subjects in higher education. Globally, less than 30% of researchers are women.

Longstanding Biases and gender stereotypes are still the main reasons women are not as involved in the STEM field as they should. We need to smash these negatives and discrimination, and most importantly, celebrate and recognise the contributions of women in Science.
