In the 19th Century, the term âcupcakeâ was used for cakes made up of ingredients measured by the cupful. Teacups and ramekins (small clay pots) were used for baking hence the name âcupcakesâ. This was way before the invention of multi-cup pans.

The first cupcake flavour was chocolate cake with white icing called the, surprisingly, cupcake. This was the first commercial cupcake unveiled by Hostess in 1919.Â

Cupcakes were also called numbers (1234) cakes or quarter cakes. 1234 simply because they are made of four ingredients one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour and four eggs.Â
